Grodo GS1000 full size headphones

It’s been a few months since Grado started shipping their new top-of-the-range GS1000 headphones and I’ve been keeping my eyes out for a good review. Finally, I’ve found one.

The review in Audiophile Audition doesn’t dispoint with these $1000 full-size headphones recieving glowing praise. As is to be expected, the reviewer finds the GS1000 have raised the bar for sound quality with John Grado’s Labs again producing the goods like no one else.

“Musically, these new flagship ‘phones can handle whatever the music demands of them. They can be delicate with a classical string quartet, able to retrieve the precise moment of attack, the smallest nuance of performance; or they can bowl you over with The Great Wall Of Grado sound from a great blues band, yet still capture the smallest details within the stonework of that wall.”

The reviewer, Max Dudious, then goes onto test the headphones with a variety of musical sources including classical and jazz albums and the GS1000 never fails to impress.

Furthermore, Dubious also finds the headphones to be amazingly comfy. This is due to Grado’s decision to make the headpieces from foam rather than the traditional padded leather. According to the review, this decision really paid off.

The only small fault (and it’s a really small fault) the reviewer can find with the GS1000 is that they can be a bit unforgiving on a poor setup. Those with poorer quality components in their hi-fi system might find the Grado ‘phones expose these components while other headphones might cover their failings. Still, I expect most people who are spending $1000 on a pair of headphones are already going to have a pretty good set-up.

iGrado headphones
Grado have broken from their tradition of high-end audiophile headphones by aiming their latest headphones, the unfortunately (but somewhat predictably) named iGrado, squarely at the iPod market.

Grado are describing these ‘phones as “the high-end sound in the low-end market” and by using the same driver as the respected SR60 they should offer excellent sound quality for the price.

As usual, Grado have come up with an unique design that some will undoubtedly hate although they should appeal to fans of retro gear.

The iGrado will be released in America at the beginning of September priced at $49.

Grado GS1000 full size headphonesGrado Labs have announced that they’ve started shipping the Grado GS1000 full-sized headphones.

The GS1000 are the Grado’s new flagship headphones and they’re proud of them “The Grado Statement GS1000 has been on the drawing board for sometime, and we have to admit that this is our finest effort to date.”

These headphones aren’t an ordinary set of cans and for your $1000 you get a mahogany air chamber and larger ear cushions that let your ear sit inside the cushions to give a more expansive sound.

They’ve also redesigned the driver to improve the sound quality and give a more balanced sound.

Although these headphones are way beyond the budget of most people, if you really want as close to the “perfect” sound as possible, this could be the way to go.
