Turtle Beach Ear Force W3 Wireless Headphones

Turtle Beach are expanding their well-respected range of gaming headphones with the Ear Force W3, a set of wireless headphones aimed specifically for the Nintendo Wii console.

Due to the rather “energetic” movements required during a session of, for example, Wario Ware Smooth Moves, the W3 are designed to stay onto your head no matter how much you jump about while pretending to skip or hula hoop.

Rather unusually, these headphones don’t use Bluetooth and instead require a sender box supplied with the headphones which plugs directly into your Wii. Handily, Turtle Beach also supply an audio cable splitter to allow you to use the headphones without pulling the audio cables out of your TV.

Available now priced at a fairly reasonable $59.95.

Here’s another great review from The Tech Lounge, this time for the Altec Lansing AHP612 Wireless Studio headphones.

These wireless headphones use the 900MHz frequency range and are large, so are mainly designed for use in the home. The reviewer tested them with music, games and movies and was impressed with all three although the bass was a slight let down.

Apart from that, the only real problem the reviewer found with these cans was some slight interference problems around fluorescent lights so that probably rules out office use.

Onkyo MHP-A1 Wireless Headphones

Japanese manufacturer Onkyo are about to release the MHP-A1 wireless headphones.

These headphones operate on the 2.4 Ghz part of the spectrum and have a range of around 30 meters from the base station. As these things go, the full size headphones are pretty good looking with a discreet base station.

They will be available in Japan next month priced at around ¥25,200.

Auto Express have compared five sets of infrared headphones for use in cars in their latest issue with Alpine’s SHS-N252 coming out as the favorite.

The idea of the comparison is to find the best headphones to keep kids quiet during long journeys and compares the Alpine SHS-N252, the C-KO IR-H688-2A, the Blaupunkt IVHS-01, the C-KO CENIR388A and the C-KO IR5.1.

Unsurprisingly the Alpine headset leads the comparision though some might find it a bit pricey at £110, though it does come with two pairs of headphones. Auto Express were particularly impressed with the sound and build quality and also the dual channel feature that allows switching between two sources, for example a DVD player and car stereo.

They also give a favorable mention to the C-KO IR-H688-2A, the only other two channel receiver in the test. These are a fair bit cheaper than the Alpine at only £40 but according to the test have inferior sound quality.

Sony DR-BT10CX Wireless Stereo HeadsetSony have announced a new mobile phone headset, the Sony DR-BT10CX.

This headset will pair with any Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone to allow you to listen to your music and make phone calls wirelessly. Well, sort of, there’s still wires between the headphones and the Bluetooth receiver but no direct link to the phone.

As is usual with wireless headsets, the DR-BT10CX requires a separate power source and includes a Lithium-Ion battery which Sony claim will provide 11 hours of communication time or around 100 hours on stand-by. The headset will also ship with a handy charging dock.

There are no details on the price or release date yet but there’s some more info (including the user manual) on the FCC site.

mTUNE-N iPod Nano HeadphonesThe people over at Untangled Life have written a great article on the range of wireless headphones that work with an iPod Nano.

It’s an interesting read, especially for those who are looking for something that little bit different. I think my favorites are probably the mTune-N which allow you to plug your Nano straight into the full sized headphones. I’m not sure if I would recommend jumping about with them on though, just in case the little beast flies out!

Also of note are the iMuffs, which, as well as having a great name, allow you to connect to your iPod using Bluetooth and control your music via the headphones. The only downside is that you need to connect a small Bluetooth adaptor into your iPod Nano, but it’s a small price to pay for headphones that look this good. I guarantee heads will turn.
